Looks ordinary, but it's anything but. Double-layered flannel ombre, connected by needle punching.

ードルパンチでつなぐ二重構造のフランネルオンブレ

At first glance, it looks like a familiar flannel ombre check. However, this fabric has a somewhat unique structure, created by fusing two layers of fabric together with needle punching. It has the thickness and softness provided by brushing, as well as the firmness that allows it to hold its shape beautifully when tailored into a shirt. This is a flannel that Shuttle Notes has reimagined starting from the very structure of the fabric itself.

Two layers of fabric, made into one with needle punching

At a glance, it's a somewhat familiar flannel ombre check.

However, this fabric is made a little differently.

What we took on this time was connecting two layers of fabric with needle punching to finish them as a single piece of fabric.

Needle punching is a process that involves repeatedly driving needles into the material to entangle the fibers of each fabric, fusing them together.

Unlike bonding them with adhesives, the fibers themselves are entangled. As a result, it has the thickness of two layered fabrics while maintaining a natural, unified feel as a single piece of fabric.

The surface is thoroughly brushed, taking advantage of the thickness unique to the double-layer structure.

Heavyweight, but not just soft

We applied a thorough brushing to the surface.

When you pick it up, the first things you notice are the thickness expected of a heavyweight fabric and its soft, plush texture.

However, it is not just simply soft.

The fabric retains the right amount of firmness, so when tailored into a shirt, the contours of the collar, pockets, and sleeves stand out beautifully.

It has thickness, but doesn't look bulky.
It is soft, but holds its shape.

That balance is what we aimed for with this fabric.

Despite being a thick, brushed fabric, the contours of the pockets and stitching appear clearly.

Changing a classic ombre check from its structure

How do you add a new expression to an ombre check, which is in a sense a perfected classic pattern?

Rather than adding flashy designs, we create something different from the usual flannel by changing the structure of the fabric itself.

It looks normal.

But touch it, and you'll be a little surprised.

Wear it, and you'll notice the difference even more.

We believe that creating fabrics like this is a unique challenge for Shuttle Notes.

By combining brushing, needle punching, and fabric design, we have even considered the three-dimensional form of the shirt.

Shuttle Notes' fabric making

It's not just about weaving; it's about brushing, finishing, and, in this case, needle punching.

By combining these techniques rather than thinking of them individually, there are still new possibilities for fabric.

Creating a sensation that is slightly different from what has come before, within something that looks familiar.

By combining the possibilities of fabric creation, Shuttle Notes continues to craft a "normal" that you have never seen before.
