工場で動き続ける、古いTOYODAのシャトル織機。
現在の高速織機と比べれば、決して効率の良い機械ではありません。ゆっくりとシャトルを往復させ、一段ずつ緯糸を打ち込みながら、生地を織り上げていきます。
長い年月を経た機械のため、同じ型の部品はほとんど残っていません。
大きな故障が起きれば、交換する部品が見つからないこともあります。つまり、壊れたら終わりになる可能性がある織機です。
だからこそ、日々の手入れを欠かすことはできません。
わずかな音の違い、振動の変化、糸の張り具合。職人は織機のそばに立ち、機械の様子を確かめながら、必要な調整を重ねていきます。
使い終わったシャトルや管も、ただの道具ではありません。一本一本に糸を巻き、状態を確認し、次の仕事に備えます。傷んだ部品は修理し、ときには手を加えながら、もう一度使える状態へ戻していきます。
古い機械を使うということは、昔の方法をそのまま守ることではありません。
今日も動かすために考え、直し、受け継いでいくことです。
シャトル織機で織られる生地には、ゆっくりと糸を打ち込むことで生まれる、独特の膨らみと柔らかさがあります。均一すぎない表情や、手に触れたときの奥行きも、この機械と職人の仕事によってつくられています。
機械だけでも、生地は織れません。
職人だけでも、生地は織れません。
長く使われてきた織機と、その状態を理解する人の手。その両方が揃って、はじめて一枚の生地になります。
壊れたら終わり。
その緊張感を持ちながら、できるだけ永く使い続けるために、私たちは手間を惜しみません。
今日も工場では、シャトルの音が響いています。
その音を絶やさないことも、私たちのものづくりの一部です。
An old TOYODA shuttle loom continues to run in our factory.
Compared with today’s high-speed looms, it is far from efficient. The shuttle moves slowly back and forth, inserting the weft one pick at a time as the fabric gradually takes shape.
After so many years, replacement parts for this particular model are now extremely difficult to find.
If a major failure occurs, the part needed to repair it may no longer exist. In other words, once it breaks beyond repair, that could be the end of the loom.
That is why daily care and maintenance are essential.
A slight change in sound, an unfamiliar vibration, or a difference in yarn tension. Our craftspeople remain close to the loom, carefully observing its condition and making the necessary adjustments.
The shuttles and pirns are more than simple tools. Yarn is wound onto each pirn, its condition is checked, and it is prepared for the next production run. Worn parts are repaired and, when necessary, carefully modified so that they can be used again.
Working with an old machine does not simply mean preserving the methods of the past.
It means continuing to think, repair, adapt, and pass on the knowledge required to keep it running today.
Fabric woven slowly on a shuttle loom has a distinctive loft and softness. Its naturally varied surface and tactile depth are created through the relationship between the machine and the craftsperson who works with it.
A machine alone cannot weave fabric.
Nor can a craftsperson do so alone.
Only when a loom shaped by many years of use is paired with hands that truly understand its condition can a piece of fabric be made.
Once it breaks, that could be the end.
With that sense of responsibility, we spare no effort in caring for these looms so that they can continue working for as long as possible.
Today, the sound of the shuttle still echoes through our factory.
Keeping that sound alive is also an essential part of our approach to manufacturing.
